Fort Wayne FC remained unbeaten in the USL League Two season with 2-0 victory over Kings Hammer FC Columbus on Wednesday night at Bishop D’Arcy Stadium.
Caio Oliveira and Matthew Catavolo broke the match open with second-half goals.
Oliveira sent a shot in the 49th minute that caromed off the goalpost and slipped just inside the opposite post for a 1-0 lead.
“It felt amazing. We worked a lot for it. We knew it was coming. I was glad it was me,” said Oliveira, who has scored twice this season for Fort Wayne FC (2-0-1).
Catavolo provided the insurance goal 3 minutes later, intercepting a pass by an opposing player, turning that player around, and then finishing, in front of a crowd of 1,601.
It was Fort Wayne FC’s first home match of the USL League Two season, following a 2-0 victory at the Dayton Dutch Lions on May 17 and a 1-1 draw at Lexington SC on Friday.
“Of course, you want to win all of (your matches), but I thought we had a good result in Lexington for how the game went,” said Fort Wayne FC coach Mike Avery, whose club won the Valley Division the past two seasons. “If you win your games at home and don’t give up too many points on the road, usually you’re in a pretty good place at the end of the season.”
Kings Hammer FC Columbus dropped to 0-2-0.
Next up for Fort Wayne FC is a 7 p.m. match Saturday at Bishop D’Arcy Stadium against Kings Hammer FC Cincinnati. It’ll be Mental Health Awareness & Healthcare Workers Night – mental health professionals and healthcare professionals, who have proper identifications or credentials, can take advantage of a Buy One, Get One Free ticket offer on the day of the match.
